Leaves of the yellow, orange and red variety are beginning to show up in the woods and tundra and every day we are closer to that time of year that we love most here. The time of the year when running dogs becomes the most important part of every day. The nights are getting cooler and darker each and every day. We have a thermometer on our alarm clock that tells us the outside temperature and this time of year we often awaken in the wee hours of morning to see if the temperature might be cool enough to run the dogs. Temps in the mid 40’s warrant a run on the four wheeler.
The rest of the dogs will be returning soon from the glacier and we have a lot to do before they do. This past week we had two young hard working volunteers come on board to help us get ready for fall. Nick Ellickson from Minnesota rode his motorcycle all the way up to Alaska to find a job and helped us out for a week. We also had Cooper McDonnel from California give us a hand. Cooper is starting his senior year of highschool and decided to do a solo trip to AK to experience the state. He finished his trip off learning about what it takes to run a sled dog kennel.

The guys helped us get the handler yurt, outhouse, and dog yard fixed up and ready for fall training. We even got out for a run with the dogs. Nick is a great photographer and he took some awesome time lapse photos and shots of the dogs. Hopefully we’ll be able to show those soon. The help we got from these guys was awesome.
